Rome wasn’t built in a day and you can’t see it all even in seven. The good thing is that it makes you return again. Nevertheless, visiting Rome requires a well-planned schedule. Here’s my list of the recommended 10 viewpoints that might also save some of your time 🙂
- Orange gardens
One of the most beautiful places to observe the sunset from. The plan of the garden is very symmetrical and its central point is oriented towards the dome of the St Peter’s Basilica (where else, right?). Just be careful, the gates close at 6pm.

- Up the stairs at Il Vittoriano
I know what’s on your mind now – SO MANY steps?! Wait a minute, since the monument is visible from every corner of Rome, it should work the other way round too, right? Not to get confused, Il Vittoriano can also be found under the name of the “Altar of the Fatherland” which sounds completely ridiculous to Romans. They’re amused every time it’s mentioned 🙂

- Terrace del Pincio
I would be able to spend literally hours looking over the Piazza del Popolo. Check the axis running through the “square” and those mirrored churches on the left (south if you care a little bit more about the point of compass). Surprisingly, those twin churches have the interiors differently decorated.
You can continue the walk with the beautiful vast gardens and Villa Borghese that are now behind your back.

The obvious but absolutely breathtaking – St Peter’s Basilica Cupola
An amazing spot to observe the geometry of the square from, if we can still call it a square. Bernini’s intention of widely open arms with colonades and statues welcoming/hugging each visitor while putting the Basilica itself on a slightly higher level to underline the importance and build the respect for the institution… and more to be seen in exchange for steps!

- Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta
There is another proof that the Vatican Basilica is without doubt the main orientation point. It’s a key hole in the door to the gardens that shows the dome right in its centre. It’s magical, though not every camera can handle it 😉 Also count on queueing. However, the sunset light on the roof in the view is worth it!

- Oppio Caffé
The first indoor choice of the list is here. Oppio Caffé is a bar where you are offered the classical “aperitivo” with an outstanding view. If you choose the seats on the right of the space, you will be facing the Colloseum and yet be surrounded by locals. As it is you who picks the food from the bufet, you can’t be disappointed. Beat it.

- Campidoglio
My favourite story of all – Campidoglio is a central point of Rome. And since Rome is a centre of the world, that makes Campidoglio hill the absolute centre of everything. That’s what I was told by the undeniable Roman (kisses Elisa! xx). Well, according to the lines drawn on the ground and a slightly knobly floor, it might be true.

- Gianicolo
As well as Campidoglio, Gianicolo is another of the seven hills that Rome was established on. It puts Rome in a different light, especially during the night. It seems so far away while you can certainly point out specific buildings. If you’re (un)lucky enough, you’ll be leaving with a rose in your hand. - Spanish steps
Seriously, can you name a better place for people watching? After long walks you’re happy to sit down with a gelato and relax, I bet you do. Because we did too 🙂 And I promise, there is some real material to watch.

- Castel Sant’Angelo ‘s terrace
Original mausoleum leads you to the top terrace which is guarded by a couple of seagulls who are willing to pose on your pics. N.10 might come off as touristy but I see it as distinctly valuable.
Lungotevere Castello 50, Rome
If we can agree here that Rome is not just pizza, ice-cream and ruins, I’d be delighted and this post would have some meaning.
